Q: Is the Audi very high maintenance? Is is very expensive to buy parts?
I'm planning to buy an 1999 Audi A6 Quattro and I don't know to much about the maintenance on the car. I don't want to get a car thats going to cost me a lot of money. I need to know if they break down a lot?

A: I had one, I'll never buy another, German engineering :( It's funny you should mention Audi, there's one up the street from us with no engine in it :(

Q: Audi A6 4.2 Quattro Radiator temp?
Hi all, I have an Audi A6 4.2 V8 Quattro. I spotted in june a small radiator hose leading to the expansion tank was leaking. I have since replaced with an audi part and also replaced the expansion tank. Since then i have noticed that the temperature of the car according to the gauge takes longer to warm up also once warmed up putting the heater on will cool the temperature on the guage lower that it should. It should get up to 90C and stay til the engine is off and cooling begins. Instead while drivin the temperature gets to 90C eventually then when i coast the car or put the heater on the temperature drops to 70C You can feel the heater air cool at the same time. I have since then had the Thermostat, Water pump, and 2 temperature sensors replaced. I have run out of things to fix that could cause this. Does anyone have any ideas? Cheers It could be an air lock. The possibility is there. I have had the system flushed by 2 garages and 1 was an audi specialist. I am not to sure its the radiator though as i think the problem is the opposite. I cant keep the temperature normal its always dropping and the temperature wont rise about its normal temperature. I will have a look at the bleeding procedure for the cooling system see if i can do something with it.

A: I think you really need to recheck the thermostat work. If you think your car cooling system got air pocket, find a tech who have cooling system Airlift tool (made by Uview). Airlift kit is used by many factory dealer service department including Audi. An auto tech can check temperature at heater core inlet/outlet and radiator hoses and use the reading to narrow down the problem area. In your case, I would block the coolant flow from thermostat by using hose clamp pliers. You can clamp the hose at the front corner of right cylinder head. If the temperature goes up to normal and heater works well, I would replace thermostat again. Also don't forget to check coolant reservoir cap.

Q: How long does it take to install a headlight assembly on a 1999 Audi A6?
I feel like i am being ripped off for labor, the part cost about $400 but now they are saying that the total is $691 labor is $60 per hour, I just dont see how it could be almost 5 hours in labor, i feel that i am being ripped off.

A: should take less than a half an hour

Q: my cd changer doesnt work in my 1998 audi a6 2.8 quattro?
they said it will cost $130 to look at it besides parts at the audi dealership and i dont have that to pay thats too much any ideas who can look at it for me? will it be possible if i get a new radio installed in the dash and remove my stock one my dashboard will still tell me what station is on and what song is playing?

A: You could just swap it out for a new head unit, or play around with all the connections and components and try and get it to work yourself

Q: i need part numbers for audi a6 2.6 v6 throttle body?

A: Call the dealers parts department. They will help you identify the parts.

Q: Audi 1999 A6 heater smells when high like burning?
I have audi 1999 a6. When i turn on the heater and it's fully warm. I smell something like burning and see Grey color foam coming out of the dashboard vents when fan is high. I have changed the cabin filter but that Grey foam was not the part of that. It's something else. Could some one tell me what is that? So that i can change it. thanks

A: It is probably a heater/AC control door seal. It is either the one that the temp selector controls or the one for whether you want fresh air or recirculate the inside air. You will need to disassemble the entire system to find and replace. On the burning smell I would at the least take the fan out and see if the foam is rubbing on the fan blades or if the motor is going bad and burning up. Either you will find a bunch of foam in the fan blade area or the motor will smell burnt

Q: Changing audi A6 front blinker bulbs....help?
I have a 2000 audi a6 2.7T......I got a pair of silver vision bulbs for my front corner blinkers (the yellow part)....How do I go about replacing the bulbs?

A: u can do it but we dont have practice(may spoil) , so better find a person who can do

Q: my AUDI A6 gearbox "die" 2nd time. i had change it 1 1/2 year ago under warranty, n now it "die" again. why?
audi A6 gearbox fatal will lead by any other part of the car? i already changed 2 new gearbox, and now got in to same gearbox problem again! pls help me. what wrong wit this AUDI car?

A: Ok, so its an A6.....Do I need to assume its a manual? Do I also have to guess the nature of the re-occurring problem? You say it died....do you mean a clutch failure? Hmm...that sure changes things. Audi's are indeed "carbage", but this is not characteristic of the product line.

Q: my audi A6 LED interior lights fade in and out??
So we just bought this 98 A6 quattro and took it for its 1st drive on the autobahn yesterday and noticed something odd. Every now and then all the dashboard lights (including the lights on the glove comparment, etc -all of them) would light up all bright...they'd stay that way for a bit and reverse back to the regular dimmed level. There was no warning or problem displayed on the console. Whats going on?? We couldn't associate it with any particular action on our part. The only thing we could think of was the DVD player installed may be responsible somehow (messing with power supply? no idea) Is this normal?? is there some feature we don't know about? (this is our first audi) just took it to the dealer today. Hopefully they will find whats wrong with it. (got other issues too :( ) thanks for your suggestions.

A: watch the volt meter on the dash on the American model it s the last gage on the right. if it goes down when the lights dim it has to be your alternator. If the volt meter stays constant then it would have to be some type of regulator or relay acting up.

Q: Black oil coming from my muffler?? Audi 1998 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro.?
ATTENTION CERITFIED MECHANICS!!: My friend works on cars and says I have something I think called a Blow Buy....WHAT IS THAT. Also there's black oil leaking from the engine under the car. Does anyone have a clue about the cost of parts and labor!!

A: Without knowing more details... sorry no. It could need anything from a simple gasket (assuming your friend is wrong about the blow-by) to a full rebuild or new motor (assuming your friend is on the right track and there is blow-by, then how bad, damage, etc.), so in short, from the detail given, I couldn't begin to guess the costs of parts and labor. Sorry. :(

Q: A6 vs 325xi?
I have just recently drove a 04 BMW 325xi 5 speed and I loved driving stick agin. I currently own a 99 Audi A6. I was thinking about getting a 02 BMW 325xi. Overall is it worth it to get the BMW over an Audi, in quality, parts and labor for fixing, and ride? Or would a turbo A4 be better to go with?

A: i think the Audi has better build quality and it is more reliable in general. If you want a stick i would go with an A4 with a manuel but unless you are going to tune it i would get a V6 with the stick. if you live in sowy aria i think you will find quattro a superior system to BMWs AWD. BMW has the advantage in dry wheather handeling if you get a rear drive car but you loose the biggest advantage of BMW if you buy a XI. Parts and labor are pretty comparable depending on the shop you use and between the A4 and the 3series reliability is comperable as well. As the cars get larger Audi becomes more reliable expecialy when you compair the & series to the A8. ride wise i like the Audis better and for stearing feel on the older cars i think BMW was better but on newer cars Audi has really cought up and BMW only has a slight advantage if any. I think for an all around every day car stick to Audi. I would get the 3.0 though if you dont want to tune the car.

Q: How can I sell a part of my Spleen for $$$?
The spleen regenerates and I heard you can get as much as $40 000 selling a slice of yours. Who do I need to get in touch with to get this done? I wonna use my spleen money to buy me a new Audi A6 and some fresh outfits...

A: I looked into this, it is illegal to sell any organs you have, you can donate them but you can not sell them. I am sure there are some loop holes and if you figure one out let me know, I would sell my kidney for beer money...just feel sorry for whoever gets it.

Q: Necessary to use new nuts on refitting?
I have an audi a6 2.5TDi Quattro 1996 and my haynes manuel says i need to use new nuts when refitting my front anti roll bar with new bushes (obviously i have to take the originals off when replacing the bushes). But all the local parts people either don't have them or don't have sets to hand ( i need ot large ones for the outer ones and 4 for the inner bushes bracket) and have seemed surprised and said no one seems to be asking for them so it can't be necessary....but haynes says....

A: they are lock nuts and should not be reused but if you cant find new ones put lock tight on the old ones, auto store can sell you some

Q: New nuts necessary?
I have an audi a6 2.5TDi Quattro 1996 and my haynes manuel says i need to use new nuts when refitting my front anti roll bar with new bushes (obviously i have to take the originals off when replacing the bushes). But all the local parts people either don't have them or don't have sets to hand ( i need ot large ones for the outer ones and 4 for the inner bushes bracket) and have seemed surprised and said no one seems to be asking for them so it can't be necessary....but haynes says....

A: Are they of a locking type? Do you see a small plastic collar embedded in one side of the nut? This would be the only reason I could think of replacing. There is a product called ''Locktite'' that you can use to secure the nuts. It is available at the parts store and should enable you to use the old nuts.

Q: Should I buy a new car?
I just found out my engine in my 95 toyota corolla had an internal part failure and as a result a hole was put through my engine block. It will cost about $2800 for a used engine and labor to be put in my car. Now I know my car is old, but for the most has been very reliable. My mom was the only previous car owner before me so I know the history of my car. I am college student with NOT A LOT OF MONEY; should I buy an used 1996 AUDI A6 for about $3500 that needs passenger window fixed, and right motor mount repaired which will bring the cost to about $4000. I know I am pretty much in a lose-lose situation, but I am just not sure what lose I should take. I feel with having someone else’s used car I may pay more money than what it is worth and have to put tons of repairs into it, but I am not sure if putting $2800 into my old but reliable piece of junk is the best thing either. What should I do?

A: In my opinion, get your car fixed....If thats all that is wrong with it, and you dont have any other issues...its worth it.. I work for Audi, and if something else goes wrong on that car, you are SCREWED!! EVERYTHING is soooo expensive if it breaks...and labor to get it fixed is usually 140.00/hour if not more. Like you said, yours is old but reliable...at least you know what you are getting yourself into there!
