Q: 2002ish Audi S4/A4 or a 1995-1999 Bmw M3? Which is the better choice?
Hello, I'm looking for my first car. I know some what about these cars and how fast they go etc..I am a very responsible person. Right now I'm only 14 but I wanted to do my research on the car that I would like to have. I am a great driver for my age. I can drive a stick. I wanted to know what your opinion is on these cars. I live in the southern part of Tennessee so snow is not really that much of a problem at all. So I just want your opinion about the car and the pro's and con's. Insurance, maintenance, etc.... That really all I have to say. Thanks!!

A: Firstly, both are great cars which manage to divide opinion whenever they are talked about together. The truth is that they are both excellent in different ways. The M3 is usually referred to as a great driver's car, and it is. It handles superbly, is extremely controllable when the rear end kicks out and is very rewarding to drive. The S4 is more refined than the M3. Not that it's any slower as previous posters have pointed out, and it's definitely quicker than the late '90's M3 you're looking at. Round a dry track, there's little between a 2003 S4 and the same vintage M3. On a wet track, the S4 will win every time thanks to 4WD. The V8 soundtrack from the Audi beats the straight 6 BMW as well. Both will cost you an arm and a leg to insure. You may be luckier in the US, but in the UK it would be very difficult to get insurance for those under 30. Both are sports cars after all, with over 300BHP under the bonnet and both will be expensive to maintain, especially if they go wrong - which, being German, they don't do often. Comparing the two is a bit like comparing fine wine and beer. Both will get you drunk, but in different ways.
